Crown Jewel of the City: Historic Chaska Athletic Park

The Chaska Cubs started their 98th season on May 3. Since 1950, the Cubs have called Historic Chaska Athletic Park home. Built by dedicated community members to give the Chaska town baseball team a permanent home, the venue has become recognized as one of the best in the state.

Located at the far west end of First Street, Historic Chaska Athletic Park is not only home to the Chaska Cubs, but is also used by Chaska High School and VFW baseball.

Chaska Cubs Secretary and Communications Coordinator Kelley Spencer shared that in 2026, Athletic Park will once again host the Minnesota High School All-Star Tournament and state high school baseball playoffs, plus serve as one of four venues for the state amateur baseball tournament.

Each of these events brings fans to Chaska and gives the community a chance to show off what the city has to offer. Spencer advises fans to follow events at the ballpark via the Cubs website.

“We keep up with weather events and teams that have to reschedule and get updates to the site as we find out about them,” Spencer said. “New this year, we’ll have Wi-Fi at the park toward the end of May.”

The Chaska Cubs town ball team is made up of dedicated baseball players from the community and surrounding areas who have high school, collegiate and in some cases professional experience. Players range in age from high school students to those in their late 40s, all playing for the love of the game.

The season runs from May until playoffs in early August. If history is any indication, the Cubs generally advance in the state tournament.

The Cubs play in the River Valley North League in Class A of the Minnesota State Baseball Association. Adult admission is $5, kids under 18 and “kids” over 65 get in free, with season passes being just $25 (cash or check preferred).

Baseball, of course, is the theme at Athletic Park, but it is about more than just the game.

Nate Bostrom, marketing and promotions director for the Cubs, points out how coming to the ballpark provides the community with a gathering place where people can connect and support one another.

Many, if not most, Cubs games feature involvement from community agencies, businesses or civic organizations. The May 10 game included representatives from the Chaska Historical Society; Beyond New Beginnings, an organization providing stable housing assistance and opportunities for families and mothers in need; and local business The Hayloft Studios.

“Our goal is to connect fans with these groups and businesses,” Bostrom said. “We want fans to become friends. We’ve got 43 total groups lined up for 2026 to come to the ballpark, which is up from last year. It’s about giving back, too. We’ve been able to generate over $27,000 over the last few years for these local community groups. It all stays here locally and has raised awareness for many groups.”

Planned activities over the next month include the following events, with more to be added. Dates are subject to change, so fans are encouraged to follow the Cubs website for updates:

While community focus is key to the Cubs organization, creating a fun, family-friendly environment is also a priority.

“We want to ensure we have events for everyone here at the ballpark — a safe, fun night out for people of all ages,” Bostrom said.

Some of the planned family events include:

  • Princesses in the Park
  • Bluey appearances
  • Giorgio’s Grandma’s

Of course, any write-up about Historic Chaska Athletic Park would be incomplete without mentioning the “Best Burgers in Baseball.” Each Sunday home game — the Cubs play at home every Sunday in June and July — features freshly grilled burgers for $6.

Masterfully prepared by dedicated burger aficionados, these popular items live up to their reputation and can be verified as delicious by this writer. The concession stand offerings are affordable and add to the overall experience at any Cubs or Hawks game.

Check the Cubs schedule and, on the next beautiful evening of a home game, come out to Historic Chaska Athletic Park for great baseball and family fun.
