Kirk’s Captain Corner is a regular feature that will allow Carver County residents to get to know the student-leaders of the various teams in our high schools. Today, we feature senior Captain Zachary Daly of the Chanhassen baseball team.

You played multiple sports growing up, but have settled into baseball as “your sport.” What about the game made it win out over all others?
I have always enjoyed playing baseball so much. It became my sport because I liked being able to play outside in the nice weather with my friends. I love leading my team on the mound, and I think my calm disposition is well suited for the pressure-filled role of a pitcher.
What has been your favorite memory of Chanhassen baseball so far?
My favorite memory was finishing runner-up in our section my junior year. The team was super good, and I always had fun with them.
This year’s Storm squad is a talented mix of experienced seniors and some impressive underclassmen. What are your goals for the team this year?
I think we are very talented, and I believe that we can get back to the section championship and surprise a lot of people this year.
Every baseball team has a clubhouse jokester or two. Who would you give that title to, and why?
I would give the title to Dylon Olsen and Will Maschka, because they always have something funny to say in every situation.
You’ve committed to play baseball at Saint John’s University next year. What about the school and the Johnnies program made it an easy decision?
I really like the setting of Saint Johns and the size of the school. My dad graduated from there and he loved it. I really like the coaching staff, what they believe in and the direction they want to take the program. The program remodeled their clubhouse too and it is a super nice addition.
Your twin brother, Matthew, is also attending SJU. What have the two of you discussed about your transition to college life?
We are both super excited to experience this next chapter together and continue to support one another and have fun together.
What does it mean to you to be a team captain?
It’s a big honor. It shows that my coaches and teammates respect me and see me as a leader. I think it helps me to work harder to set a good example for everyone else in the program, too.
