The Chaska Hawks track and field teams turned in one of their most complete performances of the spring on Saturday, with the girls claiming the Lakeville North Mega Meet team championship and a host of individual highlights on both sides.
Chaska’s track and field teams have enjoyed a great start to their spring season. Saturday’s performance at the Lakeville North Mega Meet would be no different.
The Chaska girls won the Mega Meet championship, far outpacing second place Elk River.
On the Boys’ side, the Hawks also came home with an impressive finish, placing fourth among 14 teams.
Both teams logged a plethora of memorable performances, according to boys’ Head Coach Nate Foss.
“We had MANY season bests and personal bests throughout the meet,” said Foss.
Senior Captain Josh Schmidt, the state’s record holder in the pole vault, continued rewriting Minnesota track & field record books with a Mega Meet record vault of 16 feet. The NDSU commit was a full 4 1/2 feet ahead of the second-place finisher.
One of the more inspiring races of the day for the boys was by junior Ivan Peterson, who dropped nearly 10 seconds off his season best to win the 1,600-meter run by half a second. Peterson’s new lifetime best ranks fourth all-time on the Chaska High School record books.

Senior Captain Nick Robinson was a two-time podium finisher, winning the discus throw, and finishing runner-up in the shot put. Robinson, who will throw for Division II South Dakota Mines next year, had his lifetime best result in the shot put.

Senior Captain Fred Harris was runner-up in the boys’ 100-meter dash, narrowly getting edged out for first place by a hundredth of a second. Harris would not be denied gold on the day, leading off a dominant 4×100-meter relay team that ran away with first place. Harris was joined by Schmidt and sophomores Luke Raser and Justin Greathouse on a relay team that has its sights set on the Chaska record books. Saturday’s effort ranked as the second fastest time in school history.
“That record will fall soon,” said Coach Foss.
Fred wasn’t the only member of the Harris household to bring home Mega Meet gold. His younger sisters Kaydlyn, a sophomore, and Kinley, a 7th grader, took first and second in the girls’ 100-meter dash. The Harris sisters also anchored the winning girls’ 4×100-meter relay, along with junior Moriyah Hall and sophomore Faith Lubs. Kaydlyn also found the podium for the third time on the day with a third-place finish in the 200-meter run.

Sophomore Rebecca Ross continued her stellar distance running season, with a full six-second victory in the 1,600-meter run. Other high track finishers for the victorious Chaska Hawks girls were sophomore Maddie Schaffer (third in the 400-meter), and sophomore Maria Knott (sixth in the 1,600-meter).

The Hawks girls had an exceptional day in the field events, helping them run away with the overall team title. Senior Captain Ayla Schmitz, one of the state’s best high jumpers, took the Mega Meet championship with a jump of five feet.

Also taking home a first-place finish for Chaska was sophomore pole vaulter Lyla Dreier, with a vault of 10 feet. Sophomore thrower Ofure Omozegiele had a great day herself, with a third in the discus throw, and fourth in the shot put.
In the triple jump, senior Addison Perkins (fifth) and Lubs (seventh) helped contribute to the Hawks winning total.
Chaska girls’ Head Coach Jesse Longley was thrilled by his team’s performance on the day.
“I was proud of the team effort with so many kids earning Mega Meet championship t-shirts,” Longley said.
