The transformation of Highway 212 is one of the most impactful infrastructure projects Carver County has seen in decades. As the Commissioner of District 5, I can already see this is shaping a brighter, stronger future.
The bridge is coming, the bridge is coming! The final link is being completed for Highway 212 as the final four-lane corridor section between Cologne and Norwood Young America will be completed along with a new bridge at the Bongard’s intersection.
As construction continues this spring, the excitement across Norwood Young America (NYA) and Cologne is building. The expansion of Highway 212 to a four-lane corridor is not just about easing congestion but also improving the safety of the highway and unlocking the full economic and community potential of our region.
“The expansion of Highway 212 to four lanes is a crucial milestone for our city,” said Andrea Aukrust, City Administrator for NYA. “Once completed in 2026, this improved corridor will provide a safe, high-capacity and efficient route stretching from I-494 through NYA.”
That improved connection means shorter commute times, smoother freight movement and better access to the Twin Cities metro. It also creates new momentum for development and job growth throughout western Carver County.
Construction is progressing well throughout the area. Recent milestones include the completion of bridge piers and abutments. Prestressed concrete beams were set earlier this month, and crews are now working on the bridge deck. Foundation work is also underway for the new eastbound lanes, with paving scheduled this summer from Bongards to just west of Salem Avenue. The realigned Highway 51 and the new bridge over Highway 212 are expected to open later this construction season.
Aukrust noted that the benefits are already being felt locally. “Our industrial sector is seeing significant momentum. Sackett-Waconia, a global player in the fertilizer equipment industry, is undertaking a vital expansion projected to add up to 100 jobs in the coming years. This growth would not be possible without the transportation improvements brought on by Highway 212.”
NYA is also expanding its Tacoma West Industrial Park, adding 60 acres of shovel-ready land and another 80 acres available for light manufacturing and industrial use. With direct access to Highway 212 and key rail lines, the area is positioned as a prime location for growing businesses.
“This highway expansion moves more than cars. It moves commerce, jobs, and investment,” Aukrust added. “NYA is primed to welcome the next generation of industry and innovation.”
Whether it is upgraded roads, business expansion, new housing or school enhancements, this project is helping build a stronger, more connected community.
“We are not only building a road. We are building our future,” Aukrust said. “Norwood Young America is ready to lead.”
Once the project is complete, the traffic will flow with ease through Norwood Young America, Bongards, Cologne and the City of Carver. The truck traffic will have an easier and safer transition exiting and entering onto 212 with the new bridge/interchange at the Bongards intersection. Additionally, the local traffic and farm equipment will be able to pass over 212 while heading north or south at the Bongards intersection.
As a commissioner representing this growing area, I am proud to see how Highway 212 is paving the way forward. This project positions NYA as the Gateway to the Twin Cities, a place where small-town charm meets new opportunity.
Please slow down, be aware and tentative as this final critical piece of the puzzle is completed during the construction process!
