It’s hard to believe but local town ball teams are wrapping up the 2025 season at the end of the month. Over the last couple of weeks, the Cubs have had some exciting wins and maintain a strong position in the standings.
On July 13, the Cubs (20-4) took on the Eagan Bandits on Family Fun Night. While baseball is always the focus at Athletic Park, this community-focused evening also featured giveaways throughout and Nicolet Bank provided vouchers for hamburgers for those who donated to the CAP Agency of Carver, Scott & Dakota Counties. There was an “enchanted” first pitch from Storybook Entertainment.
With seven games remaining in the regular season, the Cubs lead Section 2A of the Minnesota Baseball League and are first in the River Valley League.
“We’re playing good,” said Cubs Manager Bob Poppitz. “The guys are getting key hits to help the team out, pitching is great. It is a race between us and Burnsville at this point.”
Matt Totten started on the mound for the Cubs against the Bandits. Chaska scored the first run of the game when Michael Gabbard came home off of an Alex Twenge double in the bottom of the first. Twenge leads the Cubs this year in homers with six.
The Cubs added another run in the third inning with Griff Wirtz’s key double bringing in Walker Rogers. Eagan tied the game in the fifth with two runs and Pete Ohnsorg came in relief for Totten as pitcher. The Cubs scored two more runs in the bottom of the ninth, with Gabbard and Patrick Fontaine scoring off of hits by Walker Rogers and JT Canakes, giving the Cubs a 4-2 win.
“The team played well and it’s just great we have guys that step up and get key hits in situations when we can score,” said Manager Ben Hendrickson. “Our pitching continues to dominate. Drake Kilber has pitched 49 innings this year and has an .018 ERA. Tyler Polster leads the team with a .364 batting average, we’ve got both offense and defense.”
The Cubs have a homestand the weekend of July 18 with home games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They will have three home games the following week and the last home game of the year is on July 27. Once the regular season ends the Cubs will be seeded for the state tournament.
The Cubs recently announced the availability of a limited-edition Chaska Cubs printed program that celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Cubs and Athletic Park. Stop by the ballpark before the end of the season to get a copy.
