The Chaska Cubs are about halfway through their 2025 season and making solid progress within the River Valley League.
The Cubs (12-3) took on the Shakopee Indians (7-4) on a very warm night at Athletic Park on June 22.
Mathew Totten started on the mound for Chaska. The Cubs set the pace for the game in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Twenge and Wyatt Rogers led off with back-to-back singles. Justin Johnson singled and provided the lead that would never be relinquished.
Nick Ekstrum was hit by a pitch, and Orlando Rios and Patrick Fontaine singled in that inning to put the Cubs up 4-0. Alex Twenge scored another run in the fifth, Tyler Polster and Nick Ekstrum scored runs in the sixth off a Maddox Foss hit. The Cubs would add a run in the seventh and eighth to give them the 9-0 win over Shakopee.
The Cubs finished with nine runs off of 11 hits and two errors. Chaska pitchers, dominated by Totten, held Shakopee to no runs and three hits. The win puts them now at 2-0 in the River Valley League.
While the on-field play is the main attraction for most games, the team benefits from the dedicated and generous giving of time by many volunteers. The concession stand requires a number of people to help, not only with customer service but preparing the food and keeping supplies stocked.
Bob Roepke, Cubs board president, was prolific when asked about the team that keeps Athletic Park and the Cubs the envy of the River Valley League.
“There are so many great people helping out and doing it for the team,” he said. “We’ve got such a great community of committed folks. It makes coming to games much more fun and comfortable. From the ticket team to the press box, and taking care of the field, all of this requires dedicated people to take care of things.”
As a reminder, registration for the 2025 Cubs Golf Outing is now open for players and sponsors. This fundraising event contributes to the upkeep, improvement and legacy of Athletic Park as a key baseball venue in the Southwest Metro area and for Eastern Carver County. The event will be held July 14 at Dahlgren Golf Course.
The Cubs visit Chanhassen on June 26 for a rematch with the Red Birds after winning first game, 17-0. The Cubs will have a four-game homestand starting June 27 and includes games on June 29 (Sunday game – the best burgers in town will be available), July 1 and July 2.
