The 2026 girls soccer season is well underway, and the Chaska Hawks (0-5-3) continue to progress through their schedule and hone their skills with each game.
On Sept. 22, they faced a strong Bloomington Jefferson team (5-2-3), determined to compete for the full 80 minutes on their home pitch.
The game was the second half of a home doubleheader, following a 1-0 victory by the Chaska boys team over Jefferson earlier in the evening.
As the girls took the field, coaches Chris Bagshaw and Bradley August encouraged them to “make things happen” and “play their game.”
The Hawks took those words to heart. By the 35-minute mark, Chaska had applied strong pressure in the Jefferson zone, generating two key shots on goal, one of which sailed just over the crossbar. Jefferson also had opportunities at the Chaska end of the field, and both teams applied pressure through passing, rushes and challenges for possession. For much of the first half, play remained concentrated in the midfield as each team worked to win the ball and create offensive opportunities.
It was also Senior Night for the Hawks. A touching recognition of the team’s eight seniors — Melva Rodriguez, Kaia Quale, Ava Guseyn-Zade, Jenna Balabas, Abigail Link, Anjeli Orndorff, Amelia Gebauer and Chloe Davey — gave teammates, classmates, parents and family members an opportunity to celebrate their contributions over the years. Most of the seniors plan to continue their education, pursuing a variety of fields, with more than one interested in health care.
The second half continued much like the first, with both teams moving the ball effectively. Chaska’s passing allowed the Hawks to advance deep into Jefferson territory, but the Jaguars repeatedly found ways to tackle or intercept the ball as Chaska approached shooting range.
A consistent strength for Chaska throughout the season has been its defense. Through nine games, the Hawks had allowed just seven goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Emerson Oye played a key role in maintaining that defensive strength, making several smart plays against Jefferson and directing her teammates from the defensive end of the field.
As the second half progressed and both teams began to show the effects of a close and intense contest, every possession seemed capable of determining the outcome. The advantage ultimately went to Jefferson, as the Jaguars maneuvered past a Chaska defender and scored the game-winning goal with 4:14 remaining.
Coach Bagshaw reflected on the game afterward.
“That was a tough ending to take,” Bagshaw said. “We played very well against a good team. We didn’t give up and played smart; it was just that one rush at the end that got them the goal. We can see a few things to work on and are focused on finishing the season strong.”
Senior Kaia Quale was named player of the game for her tenacity in winning the ball and supporting her teammates.
The Hawks travel to Orono on Sept. 24. They return home Oct. 1 for a highly anticipated matchup with Chanhassen.
