PROP Launches Innovative Food Locker Program

In a community often perceived as affluent and thriving, a quieter reality persists: hunger exists, but it is often unseen.

PROP (People Reaching Out to People) is taking a bold step to meet that hidden need by introducing temperature-controlled food lockers — an innovative solution designed to expand access, reduce stigma and meet neighbors where they are.

“For many families in our community, hunger doesn’t always look the way people expect,” said Jenifer Loon, executive director at PROP. “It’s working parents skipping meals so their kids can eat. It’s seniors making difficult choices between groceries and medication. It’s neighbors who may never walk through our doors — but still need help.”

As economic pressures intensify — with rising grocery and gas prices, shifting housing markets and increasing financial strain — more households are quietly struggling to make ends meet. In many cases, food is the first expense families cut when budgets tighten.

PROP is preparing now for what it anticipates will be a continued rise in need.

The new food lockers will provide flexible, discreet access to fresh, nutritious food beyond traditional hours, directly addressing one of the most common barriers identified by neighbors: limited availability.

“Nearly every day, neighbors reach out who need food support but can’t access our services because of work demands, transportation challenges, or other barriers,” Loon said. “This is an opportunity for us to remove those barriers and meet people on their terms.”

A recent neighbor survey reinforced this need, showing that many households are currently limited to one of only two monthly appointments. That level of access is not always enough to meet the realities of today’s economic challenges. The food locker program creates new opportunities for consistent, flexible support.

Once operational, the lockers will:

  • Provide access to fresh and temperature-controlled food
  • Expand service to an additional 15–30 neighbors each day, five days a week
  • Offer convenient pickup times in the early morning and evening
  • Help reduce the stigma often associated with visiting a food shelf

The project was made possible through the generosity of an anonymous donor who helped launch the initiative. PROP continues to seek additional funding to fully support and sustain the program.

Construction is expected to begin in late summer.

“This is about dignity, access, and preparing for what we know is coming,” Loon said.

“Hunger in the suburbs is real — it’s just not always visible. With these food lockers, we can reach more neighbors, more effectively, and ensure that more families have the food they need.”

PROP has served surrounding communities for decades, providing food assistance, support services and hope to neighbors in need. The food locker program represents a significant step forward in ensuring that no one goes hungry — especially those whose needs often go unseen.

PROP (People Reaching Out to People) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing food assistance and support services to individuals and families in Chanhassen, Eden Prairie and surrounding communities. Through innovative programs and strong community partnerships, PROP addresses both immediate food needs and the root causes of food insecurity.
