Chaska Girls Tennis Focusing on Sectionals

The Chaska Girls Tennis team (6-6) took to the courts for their final home meet on Sept. 22 against Holy Family (1-9). Because it was the last home match of the season, the Hawks celebrated Senior Day. The Chaska Hawks mascot joined a strong turnout of parents and supporters as the seniors, along with their teammates, delivered a 5-2 win over the Fire.

In singles play, Mylie Brandt dominated with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the number 1 spot.

Doubles teams Raegan Foss & Ava Kriegler (6-0, 6-2), Ayla Schmitz & Jenna Tufts (6-0, 6-2), and Tessa Fuhr & Naomi Monaghan (7-5, 6-3) also earned decisive wins.

Head Coach Kevin Lungay praised the effort: “Strong play today. We had such a busy week last week, so a few days of rest got us focused. It’s so nice to give the seniors a send-off like this. We’ve got a few more matches next week, and then we’ll be placed in sectionals, where we’re sure to face some strong challengers.”

Following the Holy Family match, the Hawks traveled to Belle Plaine (6-9) and came away with a 6-1 win over the Tigers. Singles winners included Brandt (6-4, 6-3) and eighth-grader Amulya Kardirisani (6-3, 6-2).

Chaska swept doubles with victories from Foss & Kriegler (6-2, 6-0), Schmitz & Tufts (6-0, 6-0), and Lauren Petrie & Gwen Erickson (6-1, 6-2). Foss & Kriegler improved to 11-3 at number 1 doubles on the season after the Belle Plaine match.

Two days later, Chaska traveled to Orono (10-3) and fell to the Spartans 1-6. Brandt secured the lone Hawk victory with a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6, 10-3 win at number 1 singles, improving her season record to 11-4.

Chaska, now 8-7, will open sectional play on Sept. 30 at Chanhassen.
