Storm and Hawks Girls Tennis Rivalry Continues

District 112 rivals Chaska and Chanhassen met on the courts for a girls’ tennis match on Sept. 18. The Hawks entered the contest with a 6-5 record, while the Storm stood at 9-4.

For Chaska, it was their fourth match in less than a week after facing Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Monday (a 5-2 loss), Bloomington Jefferson on Tuesday (a close 4-3 loss) and New Prague on Thursday (a 5-2 win).

“It wasn’t originally scheduled to be this way, but with rainouts and the length of the season, these all came together,” said Hawks coach Kevin Lungay. “The team was all for it. To their credit, they wanted to get out and play strong opponents to better their game.”

This match belonged to the Storm, who continued their September roll with a 7-0 victory.

In singles play, Kegan Van Asten (6-0, 6-2), Lilly Christensen (6-2, 6-0) and Piper Christensen (6-1, 6-1) each claimed wins. In doubles action, Klett & Kakacek (6-3, 6-2), Omdahl & Grant (6-2, 6-0) and Tisher & Omdahl (6-3, 3-6, 10-7) secured victories for Chanhassen.

“We had a busy week and we knew it, but we were competitive in every match. The team was focused and played their game,” Lungay said. “We’ve faced some very talented teams and did not back down—we fought for every point. I think every player improved her game and I can see the team pulling together to keep everyone enthusiastic about their play.”

The Hawks will host their final home match on Sept. 22 against Holy Family, which will also be Senior Day. They will finish the regular season with road matches against Belle Plaine (Sept. 23) and Orono (Sept. 25) before sectionals begin on Sept. 30.
