See all posts in the Kirk’s Captain Corner series
(Kirk’s Captain Corner is a regular feature that will allow Carver County residents to get to know the student-leaders of the various teams in our high schools. Today, we feature senior captain Evan Dougherty of the Chaska Boys Cross Country team.)

How did you initially get into long distance running?
I was a strong runner when I played soccer and decided to capitalize on that skill and try out for Cross Country. Running was always my favorite aspect of the game.
How many years have you been a part of the Chaska Cross Country program?
Six years or since 7th grade.
What has been your favorite memory with the Hawks Cross Country program so far?
My first run to Lake Riley led to a swim with my teammates. I was able to pace with the varsity runners as an 8th grader and it was the farthest run I’d ever done at that time.
You are one of the more spirited members of this year’s senior class when it comes to supporting Hawks Athletics. How do you apply that same spirit to supporting your fellow runners?
Through pushing my fellow teammates to reach their own goals. Making every practice count toward success. Also, ensuring that every teammate is enjoying the sport.
Do you have any “running bucket list” milestones or races you’d like to accomplish some day?
Making state in cross country and track this school year.
Any early thoughts on plans for next year?
Attend a four-year university and pursue a degree in business.
What does it mean to you to be a team captain?
I’m a second-year captain and am so proud of this great team. I’m grateful they trust me to lead as their captain.
(The Hawks Boys and Girls Cross Country teams compete this Thursday, Sept. 11. at Crown College, starting at 4:30 p.m.)
