See all posts in the Kirk’s Captain Corner series
(Kirk’s Captain Corner is a regular feature that will allow Carver County residents to get to know the student-leaders of the various teams in our high schools. Today we feature senior Erika Roth, Co-captain of the Chaska Hawks Girls Track and Field team.)

When did you start running track for the Hawks?
8th grade
What do you enjoy the most about the sport?
I love pushing myself to be better in practice and then seeing that hard work pay off at meets. I also enjoy getting to work out with my friends.
You run hurdles for the Hawks. From the outside, it looks like such a tough event. How did you get into running hurdles?
My dad hurdled and when I started middle school track in sixth grade I wanted to be like him.
Track meets are lengthy events, especially when you only run a couple of times. As an athlete, what are your favorite things to do at a meet when you aren’t running?
I love cheering on my teammates while they compete!
What is your pre-meet routine?
I always drink fairlife chocolate milk before a meet and listen to worship music while I get ready.
What are your plans for next year?
Next year I am attending Luther College where I will major in elementary education and run on the track team.
Luther is a great school – good luck to you! What has it meant to you to be a team captain for Chaska?
I love track and it has always been such a special part of the year for me. Being a captain means that I can help make track a memorable experience for younger athletes, too.
