The Chanhassen (6-14) and Chaska (3-17) boys’ hockey teams met on Feb. 6 with Chanhassen emerging victorious with a 5-3 win as they head into the last week of the regular season.
Both teams and fans held a moment of silence before the game for Holy Family Coach Jason Jensen, who suffered a serious head injury during practice on Jan. 31.
The first period saw two very balanced teams skating with each other for the first 17:00. Each team had a penalty, with neither capitalizing. Chanhassen outshot the Hawks 16 to 8 with the period ending 0-0.
Things broke loose in the second period with Chanhassen scoring first at 0:55 with a shot by Ryan McPartland. The senior co-captain leads the Storm in goals and points on the season.
Brayden Soderstrom of Chaska tied the game with a goal at 5:45.
Chanhassen then scored two power play goals at 7:17 and 11:36 from Ryan Colleran and Mateo Sylvia.
Chaska netted a power play goal at 12:15 from Jake Campbell.
Chanhassen notched one more goal at 13:43 from Logan Smith, making the score 4-2 after two periods.
Both teams went to the penalty box four times for a variety of infractions in the second period.
In the third period, Chaska scored at 5:12 on Tyler Schmieg’s shot.
The game fell back into the flow of the first period with rushes back and forth, competitive moves in the corners and skirmishes in each goal crease.
Ryan McPartland scored his second of the night at 14:31 of the third to bring the game to its final score of 5-3 for the Storm.
Chaska’s Tyler Nesheim faced 58 shots on goal and Chanhassen’s Grant Atterson faced 21 shots.
Chaska (3-18) has three more games before sectionals with their last game being at home on Feb. 15 (Senior Day) at 2 p.m. vs. Prior Lake.
Chanhassen (7-14) has four games left in their season with the final home game on Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. at the Victoria Recreation Center against New Prague.
