On a picture-perfect summer afternoon, hundreds gathered in Chaska to celebrate Pride Month at a celebration sponsored by the Chaska Human Rights Commission, in partnership with the Chaska High School Gender and Sexuality Alliance and the Chaska Parks & Recreation department. The event was held at Lions Park on June 27.
The event featured a lot of fun, creative activities, including a community art project, lawn games, food and booths featuring businesses and community services such libraries, parks and recreation, churches and human services.
Face painting was popular with kids, as were rainbow-colored Jonny Pop treats. Attendees were able to work on tie-dye projects (including Chaska Mayor Taylor Hubbard).
“This is the fifth annual celebration, and is a nice community event for people to enjoy activities that are family-friendly,” said Martin Hubbard, Chaska Human Rights Commission chair.
Attendees were enjoying the festivities, too. Some comments overheard from attendees:
“It’s fun to play games and enjoy the free activities” and “This is a great opportunity for self-expression.”
“Our goal is to show the community that we care,” said Chaska Human Rights Commission Vice Chair Sarah Carlson. “We are supportive, we are allies, and we want people to know that if they are questioning their identity, we’re here to support you.”
