Chanhassen and Chaska girls’ basketball teams kicked off their seasons at the Breakdown Tip Off this past weekend at Southwest Christian High School.
Chanhassen faced Delano Saturday morning, while Chaska played against Lakeville North in the afternoon.
Chanhassen Coach Bart Inniger said his team was “focusing on a consistent effort. We have made quite a few changes to what we are doing offensively and defensively.”
That work paid off on Saturday, as the Storm beat the Tigers, 70-63. Four of Chanhassen’s starters are back from last year, with Lyla Hentges scoring 18 points, while Kate Arnold had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Skyler Mancini and Reese Keating contributed 10 and 7 points, respectively, and their freshman “starter Lucy [Hilgert] did some really positive things on both sides of the ball,” said Inniger.
Later, Chaska fans waited with signs in hand in anticipation of Addi Schneider’s 1,000th point watching the Hawks in a fast-paced game against the Lakeville North Panthers. Needing 13 points at the start of the game, Schneider hit 1,000 just after the start of the second half with a three pointer in front of her team’s bench.
Chaska’s starters were Natalie Heyer, Sophia Kruger, Kara Moger, Jenna Nelson and Addi Schneider.
A free throw by Heyer put the first point on the board, and Chaska grabbed the lead at the start of the game, but Lakeville North responded quickly and held the lead most of the game.
Schneider scored 21 points, Heyer contributed 11, Nelson had 8 and Moger had 6. Freshman Brooke Bachmann had 7 points, including Chaska’s last points of the game, a three-pointer she put in with just under a minute left in the game. Chaska fell to Lakeville North, 55-78.
