Biographical Information:
Janice Katherine Rome, 75, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, October 24 at her home in Chaska, MN. Jan was born on March 5, 1950 in Rochester MN to Leo and Winifred Schulte. As the eldest of nine on a dairy farm in Caledonia, MN, Jan drove the tractor, helped with chores, collected chicken eggs (her least favorite task) and kept her younger siblings in line, particularly the five boys. And while a part of her heart never left it, Jan’s future was not on the farm. Through hard work and grit, she earned her way to the University of Minnesota where she graduated from the College of Nursing in 1972. It was there that Jan met the love of her life, Dave Rome. Just after graduating college, they married and began the first chapter of a book that would span 50 years and include four children and eight grandchildren.
As a mom, Jan was in constant motion — always finding the time to be involved in everything from fundraising events at St. Hubert Catholic School to attending the kids’ sporting events, where her shouts of “good serve,” “nice pitch” or “be aggressive” (a favorite) could be heard in volleyball gyms and baseball fields across the metro. And, somehow, despite working full-time and having four children, Jan would make sure the family sat down for a home cooked meal every night. We still don’t know how she did it.
In her professional life, Jan transitioned from a nurse to a real estate agent — where she set herself apart with her work ethic and superior negotiating skills. She built her real estate business from the ground up and cemented herself as a leading agent in the southwestern suburbs of Chanhassen and Chaska. She loved her clients and prided herself in doing right by them. She was rewarded with clients that returned to her time and time again.
She filled the 75 years she was given with travel, friends, grandkids, sibling get-togethers, evening pontoon rides, bags tournaments, game nights, laughter, her fair share of adversity and plenty of irreverence. And while we know she will live on within us…my, oh my, how we’ll miss the fullness of her presence. She was one of one. And though we wanted more time — so much more time — we find great comfort in knowing she is back right where she belongs, in the adoring arms of our Dad.
