Chaska Students Stage Walk-out to Protest Gun Violence

By Nathan Edstrom

Students across the nation walked out of their classrooms on Sept. 5 to protest the ever-prevalent issue of gun violence in America.

The recent increase in action around the topic was sparked by the Annunciation Catholic School shooting in Minnesota, which devastated a local community.

Student leaders organized school walkouts in collaboration with Students Demand Action, a nationwide gun reform advocacy group.

Peyton Webb, an organizer of the walkout at Chaska High School, said that, “enough has been enough; we need gun law reform so that kids can be safe in school.”

Chaska had more than 250 students participate in its school walkout, with students stating that they deserve to feel safe in their classrooms.

To support the ongoing effort against gun violence in schools, text “MINNESOTA” to 644-33 to send a message to lawmakers urging them to take action.

In addition, the organizers of the walkout — Peyton Webb and Will Schapira — are launching a chapter of Students Demand Action at Chaska High School. The group will share resources about gun violence, organize community events, and work for change. The group will meet every other week during WIN.
