(Kirk’s Captain Corner is a regular feature that will allow Carver County residents to get to know the student-leaders of the various teams in our high schools. Today, we feature senior captain Raegan Foss of the Chaska girls tennis team.)

How long have you been playing tennis?
Five years
What do you love the most about the sport?
I love tennis for so many different reasons. I find so much comfort and peace in tennis even when the matches become stressful and I have so much fun in all my matches, especially because I get to have my best friend (Ava Kriegler) as my doubles partner.
What has been your favorite memory with the Hawks’ Tennis team so far?
I have had so many great memories with my tennis team. One that sticks out to me, though, is our first match of this season, which was against Mound Westonka, which is a very strong team, and we lost to them last year. But this year, during my match, Ava and I played a great match, and it was so much fun, and we won. When we were done with our match, we were watching Ayla (Schmitz) and Jenna (Tufts), whose game was close, but they ended up winning, which secured us that match, and then we had a team dinner at Culver’s after that match. All of our team dinners are so fun—and we are always there for hours!
The season got off to a great start! What do you attribute that to?
I definitely think we are doing well this season because our team has so many seniors and I think that helps not only our skills, but also we have so many leaders on our team.
What are some of your biggest goals this season, both individually and as a team?
One of my goals this season is that I make the most out of my senior year playing tennis and that I’m always having fun during practice and matches. As a team, I want us to always be supportive of each other and continue to grow as a team.
It’s still early, but what are your plans for next year?
I want to go to college to study possibly exercise science or kinesiology to go into pre-occupational therapy. My top schools right now are Iowa State and NDSU.
What does it mean to you to be a team captain?
To me being a captain is making sure everyone has a fair opportunity to learn, grow and have fun playing tennis. I have learned so much about myself through tennis and I want other people to experience how great tennis is!
