Southern Social opens Aug. 4 in the former Cuzzy’s location. It features southern-inspired dishes and cocktails in a vibrant, upscale setting.
Southern Social, the buzzworthy modern Southern kitchen, opened its newest location in Chaska on Aug. 4 at the former location of Cuzzy’s Brick House on Chaska Blvd. and it’s bringing a whole lot more than just biscuits and gravy.
When it comes to Southern cuisine, knowing what cities to visit is key. Go to New Orleans for jambalaya and Cajun snapper and Nashville for hot fried chicken and biscuits. Find the tastiest barbecue in Austin or Memphis. Charleston boasts she-crab soup and fried green tomatoes, and you’d want to pop down to Atlanta for a delicious chicken and waffles breakfast.
But what if I told you that you could have each of those dishes right here in Chaska?
Already beloved in Eagan and Woodbury, Southern Social is a gem poised to become a standout hot spot here in Carver County.
Their recipe for success? Take authentic Southern flavors, blend in a downtown vibe, stir in a combination of local hospitality and serve it all up in a rustic-elegant setting. Chaska’s newest restaurant may already be its most upscale and chic, with a vibe that rivals other trendy and swanky spots in the Metro ‘burbs.
The inspiration for Southern Social struck during a culinary research trip to Nashville, and that spirit still pulses through the menu. Signature dishes like shrimp po boy and boss hog grilled cheese sandwiches, pork belly burnt ends, pimento mac and cheese, and some good ol’ collared greens, make it clear this isn’t just Southern food. It’s Southern food done right.
For my first Southern Social meal, I went for the white cheddar grits with shrimp – marking the first time I’d eaten grits in Carver County. It was delicious; I especially enjoyed the addition of roasted corn. General Manager Travis Glenzerj said this was a unique addition to the dish.
My wife Kate selected the bolo peach woodfire flatbread with ham, pesto and a drizzle of hot honey and balsamic reduction. Also a big winner.
According to Glenzer, the most popular signature dish is the fried chicken, available in a variety of sandwiches and combos.
“The way we prepare it, the chicken comes out extra crispy and extra juicy for an unforgettable meal. Our fried chicken is always a crowd pleaser,” Glenzer said.
If you opt to try the Nashville Hot version, just be sure to have a glass of milk or water close by.
Southern Social also features a tasty and varied cocktail menu. Traditionalists can choose from more than 40 whiskey options while sweet-tooths will enjoy the peaches and cream or Georgia peach sangria. The more adventurous can try a Southern heat paloma with jalapeño-infused tequila. (Man, did that have a kick!)
Have a big group? Order up a 4- or 8-serving vintage crystal punchbowl filled with the house “Debutante” cocktail complete with serving ladle and cups.
The fun at Southern Social doesn’t stop at lunch or dinner either. They host brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with classic Southern dishes like chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy and a Southern skillet. I’m particularly excited to try the “Nashville Hot Benny” —a twist on a traditional eggs benedict with the addition of hot chicken tenders. Kids also have ample choices from their kids brunch menu.
Southern Social transformed the former Cuzzy’s Brick House with its signature blend of rustic charm and contemporary cool. Think dark reclaimed wood, soft lighting, a touch of Southern charm and a welcoming hum of conversation. It’s an upscale and fun dining experience that Chaska has been waiting for.
The outdoor patio will undoubtedly be a favorite, as well. While some may lament the loss of the Cuzzy’s sand volleyball court, the new outdoor area features couches for lounging with a drink and a large green space that will eventually feature yard games. This will be a great spot for groom’s dinners, graduation parties, reunions and more.
All in all, Kate and I had a wonderful experience at Southern Social and we can’t wait to try many more dishes and cocktails over the weeks, months and years to come. Southern Social is unlike anything we’ve had here in Chaska, and we are so here for it. We can’t wait for all of you to check out the awesome vibes here, as well.
