Writers of All Ages Take the Mic at the Chanhassen Library Open Mic Event

Communities of Belonging Chanhassen hosted its second community Open Mic on Saturday, June 14, drawing 25 attendees to the Chanhassen Library for a morning of shared creativity and connection.

The event welcomed 23 adults, one teen, and one especially enthusiastic 9-year-old participant who wrote and performed not one, but two pieces.

In total, 33 original works were shared, ranging from short poems and stories to sentimental tributes and humorous reflections. Several presenters brought pieces from published works, and one poem – written by the brave 9-year-old – was even created spontaneously during the event, inspired by the warm reaction to his first piece. Many of the readings touched on themes of family, nature and Father’s Day, reflecting the spirit of the season.

A highlight of the day came from young Gus Bottem, whose mom said he had spotted the event in the library catalog and immediately asked, “Is this for all ages?” Gus later explained his motivation simply: “I love writing.” His participation served as an inspiring moment for attendees of all generations.

The age range of participants reflected the event’s intergenerational spirit, with readers as young as 9 and as old as 87 taking the mic.

“We didn’t card anyone,” organizer and Adult Services Librarian Linnea Fonnest joked, noting that the inclusive space allowed for a rich blend of experiences and perspectives.

Attendee evaluations were filled with warm responses.

“My soul was moved by hearing others share their inspired words,” wrote one participant. Others praised the welcoming atmosphere, the opportunity to connect through writing, and the joy of hearing from such a diverse group.

One attendee summed it up: “Thank you from the bottom of my pen.”

The next Open Mic is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11, again at 10 a.m. at the Chanhassen Library. Organizers hope even more voices will join the circle to read, listen and celebrate creativity.
