It had been less than a week since the Chaska Hawks and Chanhassen Storm met in Chan for their first game. Chaska took that first game with a late inning surge, 7-6. The May 14 game was a make-up of the scheduled match that was rained out.
Chaska was coming into the game after losing in 10 innings to Waconia the day before, 11-14. Chanhassen had rebounded from their Chaska loss and was on a five-game win streak.
Noelle Stein (So.) started on the mound for the Hawks and Anna Christensen (Sr.) faced off on the mound for the Storm.
Chaska got on the scoreboard first with a Delany Farm (Jr.) solo home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning.
Chanhassen got two runs in the top of the third with a series of hits, going up 2-1.
Allana Benoit (Fr.) led off the Chaska third with a double. Ashlyn Larson (Fr.) collected an RBI single and scored Allana before the inning was over to put the game at 2-2.
Sophia Bixler (Jr.) collected a double for Chaska in the top of the fourth to start the Hawks off. Ivy Joecks (So.) collected an RBI and got Sophia home. The score would remain 3-2 until the top of the sixth inning.
Then the Storm’s Ellie Heno (Sr.) smacked a triple to set things up for her teammates to get her home and tie up the game at 3-3.
The Storm had an eventful top of the seventh with a runner on first base. Daphanie Evans (Sr.) got the Storm’s second triple of the game. She was able to score on a teammate’s hit, putting the Storm up 5-3.
As events unfolded in the seventh, Chanhassen Coach Joe Coenen could be overheard saying, “My goodness, these games are just something, aren’t they?”
As with any sporting event, anything can happen at any time and sometimes, in this game, “anything” was one team getting key hits at key times. Six Hawks collected hits in the game with Sophia Bixler (Jr.), Allana Benoit (Fr.) and Macy Anderson (Sr.) each getting doubles. Daphanie Evans (Sr.) had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Storm. Ellie Heno (Sr.) and Kenzie Windschitl (Sr.) had two hits each. In the end, Chanhassen won the game 5-3.
Chaska faced Champlin Park on May 16 and came up short, 1-13, leaving them at 5-15 for the year. Chanhassen defeated Edina 9-2 on May 15 and had their May16 game with Bloomington Jefferson rained out. The Storm are 12-5 for the year.
