(Mayor’s Corner is a regular feature where Carver County mayors share updates, insights, and messages with their communities. Carver Mayor Courtney Johnson is providing this week’s edition.)

This month I have a couple of updates on what I’ve been up to over the past month and a few opportunities for you to connect and engage.
Levee Update
Last month I testified before the Minnesota House of Representatives’ Capital Investment Committee to explain the need for an additional $3.35 million in state bonding money for Carver’s Levee Improvement Project.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that there will be a bonding bill this session and that Carver’s Levee Project receives funding in the bill.
At the federal level, I was disappointed to learn that all Congressionally Designated Spending (aka “earmarks”), including the funding the City of Carver had requested for the Levee Project, were not included in the Continuing Resolution that was passed last month. That’s the bad news. The good news is that we’ve already submitted requests for FY2026 funding.
Working in Washington, D.C.
As part of my role as a member of the Executive Committee on the League of Minnesota’s Board, I traveled to Washington, D.C., last month for the National League of Cities Congressional Cities Conference.
After two days of conference programming, we spent the final day on Capitol Hill, meeting with the entire Minnesota congressional delegation to discuss issues which are important to communities across the state, including safeguarding local decision making, increasing housing supply and affordability, and protecting and enhancing infrastructure investments.

Earth Day Hike
Join me on Tuesday, April 22, for a hike to Carver’s storied Cheese Cave. This will be a somewhat challenging, approximately 2-mile hike, which will include steep hills and areas of underbrush. We’ll meet at 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Community Park (800 6th Street West) and will begin our hike there. If the weather looks less than ideal, check Facebook.com/CarverMayorCourtney or call/text me at 612-702-7703 for updates!
Mayor’s Office Hours
Please join me next month, on Saturday, May 3, in the Broadway Room in City Hall from 10 a.m. to noon for my quarterly office hours. This is the same time as the American Bikers for Awareness, Training and Education (ABATE) Motorcycle Ride, so come downtown for breakfast, grab a coffee or take a look at the bikes, and stop by to say “hi.”
Report a Concern
Have you noticed a street light that is out, or a pothole that needs attention? While you can always call City Hall at 952-448-5353 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, there’s also the “Report A Concern” button on CityOfCarver.com. It’s an easy way to submit your questions, concerns or other non-urgent issues 24/7/365.
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about anything that’s going on in our community, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Stay connected, be informed and get involved!
