New Library, Part of Building Improvement Program, Likely to Begin Construction in 2028

The Chaska Building Improvement Program includes multiple projects that focus on several city facilities: Public Safety Facility (Police and Fire Station), Municipal Services building (Public Works, Water and Sewer, and Electric departments), Library, and City Hall.

The Public Safety Facility, first on the list, is currently under construction (scheduled to open at the end of 2025). The Municipal Services building will be tackled after that, occurring in 2026-27.

The current City Hall building – which houses the Library, City Administration, Community Development, Engineering, Police Station and meeting space for City Council and Commission – was built in 1987-88. At that time, the population of Chaska was about 10,000. Since then, it’s nearly tripled, and space is tight.

According to the City of Chaska website, construction of a new Library is currently planned for 2028-29, with City Hall renovations likely to occur after that, in 2030. Because the Library falls later on the planned timeline for the Building Improvement Program, there aren’t a lot of specific details available at this time.

“Our goal is to build a new library in downtown Chaska,” said Chaska Community Engagement Manager Kevin Wright. “The library is a destination, and we feel it is important to keep it in downtown Chaska.”
