StormHawks Girls Hockey Prevail Against Bloomington

Cold weather has settled in for the season. One source of heat is the StormHawks girls hockey team. The Chaska and Chanhassen girls squad is a co-op team with both schools evenly represented.

Going into Tuesday, Dec. 3rd, night’s game against Bloomington Jefferson (2-7), the StormHawks were 1-3 on the season, having just gotten their first win of the season on Nov. 21, a 4-3 overtime win over Hopkins/St. Louis Park. The StormHawks scored late in the game with a goal from Quinlyn Borner to tie it up at 3-3, and Evie Lundeen scored at 5:40 in OT (shorthanded) for the win, putting the StormHawks at 1-3 for the year.

As an acknowledgment for the win, Assistant Coach Gage Overby permitted the team to select his beach side apparel for the Bloomington game. Utilizing the vast resources of the internet, Coach Overby provided an incentive to the team in a snowflaked suit.

The StormHawks jumped out in front with a goal at 0:34 seconds into the game by Quinlyn Borner. Goaltenders kept each of their teams in the game all night. The StormHawks Kelsey Brastad had an outstanding game and was awarded the game puck by coaches for her efforts.

The game was tied at 1-1 with less than 4:00 left when Jefferson pulled down Quinlyn Borner, who was on a breakaway. Quinlyn was awarded a penalty shot and converted on her opportunity for a conference game win. The StormHawks were outshot by the Jaguars 30-26.

After the game, first-year Coach Brain Lawler said he was proud of the team’s intensity and effort for the game.

“The team is doing great at focusing on getting shots on the net,” he said. “You can’t score if you don’t shoot. Also, this team is learning with each game and making great strides. They don’t quit.”

With her two goals on Tuesday, Quinlyn Borner leads the StormHawks with three goals for the year and Evie Lundeen leads the StormHawks’ overall scoring with five points.

The next game for the StormHawks is Thursday at Orono (5-2). The next home game is next Tuesday, Dec. 10, against Waconia (0-10). All StormHawks games are played at the Chaska Community Center. Come out and see what Coach Overby will be wearing.
