The first snowflakes of the season have now fallen, indicating winter is soon to arrive. The upside of winter’s arrival is the start of an exciting season of Chaska Hawks winter sports.
The Chaska girls basketball kicked off their home schedule with a game Friday, November 22, against non-conference Champlin Park of the Northwest Suburban Conference.
Chaska has a good deal of depth this year with seven seniors and will be competitive in their conference. The team’s captains for this year are: Ella Keenan, Alexis Schaefer, Hanah Thul and Addi Schnider.
The Hawks came out determined and played a strong first half, at one point building a 30-9 lead with 8:19 left in the half. Champlin Park did not see a great deal of their first half shots go in and the Hawks lead at half 40-25.
The second half remained in Chaska’s control and the coaches were able to use the entire team in the effort. Forward Ella Keenan led Chaska in scoring with 22. Point guard Addi Schneider added 16 and forward Alexis Schafer had 12. Seven more players were able to enter the game and add points for the Hawks for the first win of the season, 69-46.
“It was great to have everyone get some action and get into the first game of the season,” Coach Samanth (Sam) Canter said.
Cantor was pleased with the way the team pressed and played solid defense. “The team played scrappy tonight and that was great to see in our first game,” she added.
Next game for girls basketball is Tuesday against Prior Lake at home. Home games always include 9A & and B Teams playing at 4:15 p.m., with a JV game at 5:30 and varsity games at 7 p.m.
The Chaska-Chanhassen co-op girls hockey team (the Stomhawks) started their season on Nov. 2. They are 1-3 on the season with a 4-3 win over Hopkins on Nov. 21 in overtime. Ericka Mindt leads the Stormhawks with two goals on the year, and Evie Lundeen leads the team in points with four.
The Dance Team had their first meet on 11/23 at Rosemount. The boys hockey team had their first game against St. Louis Park and lost 3-6 on Friday. The boys play again against Eastview at Apple Valley Sports Arena on Saturday.
