Winter Reads: A Cozy Reading Challenge for Adults at Carver County Libraries

(Note: Carver County Library branch managers are providing updates on exciting programs, new services, and book reviews for Carver County Local News. This month, Chaska location manager Kevin Spencer shares a peek ahead for 2026.)

Think reading programs are just for kids? Think again.

This winter, Carver County Libraries invite adults to curl up, crack a book (or press play on an audiobook), and join Winter Reads — a fun, low-pressure reading program designed just for readers ages 18 and up.

Winter Reads runs January through February 2026, offering the same excitement and motivation as Summer Reading — minus the sunscreen. It’s perfect for a lifelong reader or someone who wants a little extra nudge to read more during the colder months. Winter Reads is all about enjoying stories, discovering new favorites, and earning chances to win great prizes.

How it works is simple: read or listen to books, submit reviews, and be automatically entered into prize drawings. This year, the stakes are cozy and exciting — Carver County Libraries will give away more than 30 Barnes & Noble gift cards throughout the county. Two grand prizes of $50 will be awarded, with the remaining prizes valued at $15 each.

Getting started is easy. Register online, through the Beanstack tracker app, or in person at a local library. Patrons who have participated in Winter Reads before — or if their household has done Summer Reading or 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten — already have an account. Just sign in and enroll in the 2026 Winter Reads program.

Reviews count! Reviews can be submitted through the Beanstack app or on paper forms, available starting in January. Some reviews may be shared on library social media (with identifying information removed), giving readers a chance to inspire others across the county.

Feeling creative? Don’t miss the Winter Reads Bookmark Contest. Design a bookmark inspired by books, libraries or reading for a chance to win additional prizes. First place earns a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card, their bookmark printed and distributed systemwide, their original artwork framed, and a certificate. Second and third place winners receive $20 and $15 gift cards. One entry per person is allowed, using the official form, and all artwork must be original.

Extra perks make it even sweeter. While supplies last, everyone who registers receives a headband ear warmer. Turn in your first review and you’ll also get a coupon for a free item (up to $1) at any Friends of the Library book sale, good through 2026.

Prize drawings will take place in March, with winners notified by email or phone. All prizes must be picked up in person by the end of March 2026. Winter Reads is made possible thanks to the support of Friends of the Library groups, the Library Foundation of Carver County, and MELSA.

Bundle up, grab a book, and make winter reading season your own. Find Winter Reads — and so much more — at carverlib.org.
