The nonprofit Carver on the Minnesota, Inc. was recently was awarded a $10,000 Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant from the Minnesota Historical Society to support the launch of the “Carver Stories” oral history project.
This community-driven initiative will collect and preserve personal accounts of how two of Carver’s most historically significant disasters — the 1965 Minnesota River flood and the 1985 fire that destroyed the Riverside Ballroom — impacted the lives of residents and helped shape the identity of the community.
“We are incredibly grateful for this grant, which will allow us to capture the voices and memories of those who lived through some of Carver’s most defining moments,” said Annette Hentz of Carver on the Minnesota. “These stories are essential to understanding not just our past, but the resilience and character that continue to define Carver today.”
The Minnesota Historical & Cultural Heritage Grants are made possible by the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, which was created to support projects that preserve Minnesota’s history and cultural heritage.
This phase of the project will result in transcripts of recorded interviews with longtime residents to help preserve these chapters of Carver’s history for future generations. Volunteers from Carver on the Minnesota are actively working to identify and invite community members to participate in the interviews. For more information about the Carver Stories project or to share your experience with these two historic events, contact Annette Hentz at annettehentz@gmail.com or 952-270-2717.
