A community in peril. An opportunistic villain. An unlikely hero. Is this a blockbuster summer movie? No, it’s The SpongeBob Musical! The stage musical, based on the beloved hit cartoon, is Chaska Valley Family Theatre’s big summer show.
“We are delighted to bring this production to the stage,” Jennifer Martin (producer) stated. “It’s a heartwarming show about hope and the power of optimism. It’s got great parts for a large cast, and is family-friendly with great music, fun dances, and lots of bright colors.”
Many popular musicians contributed to the soundtrack, including Panic! At the Disco, Cyndi Lauper, and Sara Bareilles. There’s also the beautiful underwater setting portrayed by set design and lighting effects.
Director Kevin Berg said he has wanted to direct this show for a long time.
“I’ve always loved cartoons and SpongeBob was one that came out while I was entering middle school,” he said. “At its core, The SpongeBob Musical is about joy and a quixotic optimism that stands in defiance of dark reality. SpongeBob just refuses the dark, refuses the destruction. He sees the strengths in other people, his friends, and brings them together.”
SpongeBob, played by Jack Wisniewski, truly shines in this show. Wisniewski portrays the titular character on stage with his strong voice, constant positivity, and comedic timing.
Perfectly complementing SpongeBob are his friends Patrick Star (Maxum Meyer) and Sandy Squirrel (Claire Kerber). These three embody the themes of friendship and teamwork that are so evident in this story, while also making the audience laugh and having a ton of fun.
The cast also features Mr. Krabs and his daughter Pearl, Plankton and his computer wife Karen, Squidward, Patchy the Pirate, and SpongeBob’s beloved pet snail, Gary. Joining them is a dynamic ensemble of more than 40 singers and dancers.
Kristy Christenson (Anemone) is in the show with her daughter Brielle (Sardine Corp). Kristy says, “It’s a fantastic way to spend time together.”
They both enjoy learning the songs and dances together, practicing and discussing the show at home, and “working on our undersea makeup.”
Brielle loves the “wackiness and ridiculousness” of this show.
“Being in a show with people in your family is so fun,” says Addie Patterson (Electric Skates). Patterson’s father and sister are also in the cast.
“You are able to practice at home together and talk about the show at home which is really fun and special,” she said.
Her father, Steve, adds, “It’s given me a first-person perspective into my daughters’ world, and it’s created some really special memories.”
Melissa Peitsch (Karen) says, “Our family loves to do theater. It’s not easy to find a hobby that all four of us can participate in and enjoy. Being in The SpongeBob Musical together has made us embrace the silliness of the show both onstage and at home. While the schedule can get hectic, there’s nothing like sharing the tech week craziness together. An added bonus has been getting to act as an onstage wife to my real-life husband (while embarrassing our children).”
While the TV show might have been geared primarily to kids, The SpongeBob Musical appeals to teens and adults as well.
“I genuinely think this show has something for everyone,” explains Steve Patterson (Perch Perkins). “Silliness in big scoops for the kids. Great writing for the parents, which offers a lot of nuanced comedy. And performers that absolutely bring it. I’ve been blown away by the talent!”
Kristy Christenson adds, “It’s a high energy show with a lot of surprises to keep kids entertained. There is also a surprisingly deep message to the show. It’s very uplifting!”
“We’re better together than apart” is the message Director Kevin Berg hopes to convey. “Although it’s a cartoon, defying death and destruction with the power of community is a very human thing. Everyone has a skill or ability to contribute. Everyone is necessary to save the day,” he said.
The first weekend of shows went swimmingly. There’s another weekend of performances coming up, so be sure to dive in and see it.
