Chaska Educator Recognized Nationally for Humane Science Teaching

Tammy Hakanson, a science educator at the Integrated Arts Academy in Chaska, has been honored with an Honorable Mention by Animalearn as part of its 2024 Humane Science Educator Awards. This recognition highlights her innovative and compassionate approach to teaching science, which fosters creativity and respect for all living beings.

Hakanson’s integration of humane alternatives in her biology classes has made a significant impact. By offering non-animal dissection methods and incorporating art-based models into her curriculum, she ensures that her students can explore science in ways that align with humane principles.

“Receiving this award from Animalearn means my students can humanely explore, learn and create.,” Hakanson said upon hearing of the honor. “I am excited to offer alternatives to dissections in my biology classes as well as offering models for science in art projects.”

Animalearn recognized Hakanson for her commitment to shaping a new generation of compassionate and innovative thinkers. Her work stands as an inspiration to educators across the nation, proving that science education can be both effective and humane, according to a press release from Animalearn.

Animalearn, a division of the American Anti-Vivisection Society, advocates for humane science education by providing educators with access to cutting-edge, non-animal teaching tools through its Science Bank program.
