Holiday Treats for Kids of All Ages

The holiday season is just around the corner. Before finalizing gift lists and planning party schedules, why not involve kids and bake and create a couple easy and fun treats? These recipes aren’t complicated, though one does require a bit of advance planning.

Twix is a favorite candy bar for many people. This simple recipe comes together quickly, and kids can help in many of the steps.

The sugar cookies come from my Norwegian grandmother. It might seem odd to add sour cream to a cookie, but I promise, it helps make them soft and delicious! Children will have fun using cookie cutters and decorating them after they’ve been frosted.

Happy holidays!

Twix Candy

  • 1 box mini Nilla wafers
  • 1 7-ounce back of Rolo candies (unwrapped)
  • 8 ounces of chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil (optional)
  • Colorful candy sprinkles (optional)

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. On a cookie sheet, lay enough wafers (flat side up) to match with the number of Rolo candies. Add a Rolo on top of each wafer. Place sheet in oven for 1.5-2 minutes (just long enough so the Rolo softens up). Remove from oven and immediately top each with another Nilla wafer. Chill the treats for at 15-20 minutes (until chocolate has set).

Melt chocolate and oil in microwave (check each 30-60 seconds) or double boiler. Dip cookie sandwiches in chocolate using a fork, allowing excess to drip off before transferring to parchment or wax paper to set. Add sprinkles if desired, then refrigerate again until chocolate has hardened.

Alice’s Sugar Cookies

  • ¾ cup butter
  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ tablespoon vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 3 cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Cream butter, sugar, and eggs. Add vanilla and mix lightly. Combine baking soda and sour cream. Mix flour and salt together. Alternate adding sour cream mixture and flour mixture to butter mixture. Refrigerate overnight.

Roll dough out and use cookie cutters to create favorite shapes. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes (cookies will still be slightly soft).

Once cool, decorate with favorite icing and sprinkles.
