The holidays are a perfect opportunity to spread joy by giving to family, friends, and especially those in need. This season, the Chanhassen Fire Department (CFD) is continuing its annual “Toys for Tots” collection drive, accepting donations from now until Friday, Dec. 13.

The CFD began collaborating with the local Marine Corps Toys for Tots chapter at KARE 11 in 2020. This initiative was spearheaded by the current assistant chief, Don Nutter, who introduced the idea from his time with the Plymouth Fire Department.
“During COVID, there was a big push to give back to the community,” explained Ana Fatturi, fire inspector. “The first year we collected around 1,200 items for donation.
Since then, the community’s generosity has grown, with approximately 1,500 items collected in 2023. This year, the CFD hopes to surpass that number and continue bringing joy to children and families during the holiday season.
What Can You Donate?
While the name “Toys for Tots” may imply only toys are needed, the organization accepts a broad range of items, particularly those suitable for pre-teens and teens. Accepted items include, but are not limited to:
- Sporting equipment
- Books
- Cosmetics and accessories
- Games
- Hair appliances
- Backpacks and purses
It’s important to note that all donations must be new and unwrapped. Items not accepted include realistic-looking weapons, food, clothing, used or opened toys, and liquid products such as lotions or perfumes. For those who prefer not to shop, monetary donations are welcome and go a long way in supporting the cause.

Where Do the Donations Go?
Donations collected by the CFD are delivered to the local Toys for Tots chapter at KARE 11. From there, they are distributed to children in need across the community. This year, the CFD team will also appear on KARE 11 News on Saturday, Dec. 14th, highlighting the success of the campaign.
